I am 1/2 way through week 7 of Step 1 of the Metabolism Miracle diet and I feel great.  To recap:  Step 1 is 8 weeks of an Atkins-like meal plan.  I can eat meat, dairy (except yogurt and milk), non-starchy veggies, and fats.  Not all of them, there is a specific list of foods you can eat.  No carbs/starches over 5g per serving, and that 5 grams must be at least 5 hours apart.  That might sound complicated, but it really isn’t.  The book spells it out pretty well.

Until just a few days ago, it hasn’t been hard to follow.  I like most of the allowed foods, so it’s been pretty easy to find something on the list that I like and want to eat at the time.  But it is the week before Christmas and sweets are all around me.  Mostly I just remind myself of the 18 lbs I lost in the first 3 1/2 weeks, and that keeps me motivated.

That’s the other thing!  You’re not supposed to weigh until Step 1 is over.  That’s harder than it sounds!  So after my earlier decision to weigh, I have not stepped on the scale again.  That means I’m not going to tell you how much I’ve lost so far, because I’m not sure.  At least 18 lbs, so that’s fantastic.  I go to the doctor on Monday, though, so I will find out then.  I’ll let you know!

What I am going to tell you about is how I feel.

I can move again!  Before I started the Metabolism Miracle, I had a hard time moving around.  At just over 300 lbs, just about any movement was painful.  The iron is that not moving was painful, too.  If I sat or lay in any one position for more than a few minutes, something would start to hurt.  Standing, walking, bending, twisting, all hurt my back, knees and feet.  I had gotten to the point where I didn’t really notice, but I was in pain all of the time.  I’m not anymore.

I can walk around or stand in one place!  Used to be after just a minute or two my back would be killing me.  I don’t mean just a minor irritation, I mean near tears pain.  Standing in line at the grocery check-out was misery.  I know, it’s misery anyway, but this was painful misery!  Now I can walk pain free.  I can stand without hurting.  I really can’t express what that means to me.

I’m sleeping better.  My mind isn’t racing anymore, and that’s a straight-up miracle.  I would wake up at all hours of the night and not be able to go back to sleep because of all the thoughts and subjects shooting around in my head.  If you don’t have this particular problem, it’s very hard to explain.  Not only are the thoughts moving faster than the speed of light, but you’re bouncing around from topic to topic.  And for me, I would get stuck.  I couldn’t go back to sleep unless I got out of bed, went to my computer, and typed out everything I was thinking.  That’s easy for me, since I’m a writer anyway.  But it was annoying as hell!  Not to mention somewhat insomniac.

I don’t have acid reflux!  Used to be if I’d eat anything spicy within about 3 hours of bedtime, I would wake up after a couple hours of sleep feeling like I’m going to throw up, with painful acid in my throat.  That’s completely gone.  I eat spicy foods for dinner all the time with no waking up.

I’ve gone down 1 size.  I was wearing 28W and I can wear a 26W.  That’s amazing after only 6 1/2 weeks!  I have to lose 20-30 lbs to go down a size.  Luckily I still have all the clothes I bought when I lost 100 lbs in 2009, so this shouldn’t be that expensive clothing-wise.

There are so many little things that I can do now that I couldn’t do just a few short weeks ago.  Granted, this is only Step 1, but so far it’s going great.  In a little over a week I get to start Step 2, where I get to re-introduce carbs slowly (11-20g every 5 hours).  I can’t wait!

Overall I would highly recommend reading The Metabolism Miracle by Diane Kress, RD, CDE.  It’s not for everyone, but if you recognize the symptoms, you should try it out.

Also, I would highly recommend the Great Low Carb Bread company for breads you can eat even on Step 1.  Their pizza crust is fantastic and I love their other breaddy goodness too!
